Vehicle Requirements for Owner Drivers
Advice on the best vehicle for self-employed drivers
If you plan on being an owner-driver for GSS, it’s important you have the right vehicle for the work. You may be buying, renting or leasing your vehicle, but there are minimum requirements to ensure you stay busy and earning money.
Your Vehicle
You have a wide range of options when choosing your vehicle and it’s worth taking your time.
It’s a big investment, so it makes sense to chose a vehicle that matches a customers requirements. If you are working for GSS, for instance, we can advise you on the most appropriate vehicle size to maximise your opportunities.
Minimum Vehicle Requirements
- A fixed, solid bulkhead between the passenger compartment and the load space.
- A vehicle no older than 5 years old (from first registration as shown on official V5C document).
- A vehicle tracking device installed (we can help with this).
Vehicle Size
As an owner-driver, if your vehicle meets the criteria above then we can consider you to deliver goods on behalf of GSS for our customers.
Each of our customers has specific criteria to meet regarding the size of vehicle they need for delivering goods but there are two vehicle sizes that make up the bulk of our work, which decide which of our customers you can sub-contract for.
If your vehicle is not one of these sizes, we may not be able to use your services to full potential although we may be able to place you with smaller customers.
Minimum Vehicle Requirements

Category A – Minimum 5m³
(VW Transporter SWB or equivalent) - Category B – Minimum 9m³ (Mercedes Sprinter MWB or equivalent)
Renting and Leasing Vehicles
If you do not have a vehicle for providing logistics services and are looking to get one, some companies can offer you a long-term agreement to lease, hire or purchase a vehicle.
Your personal circumstances will define the terms and may prevent you from being eligible. Alternatively, you may not want to commit to a long-term lease agreement for a vehicle, which can sometimes last up to five years.
If you want to offer services as a driver, but do not want to commit to a long-term contract, we may be able to help.
